I'm a student about to go to uni and have worked ALL summer holidays to save up for an imac, and now i hear they will be updating it! I'm still within my 14 day 'no questions asked' return period, but i will be out of that period on 12th september which its supposed to be released.

I was just wondering if anyone had past experiences with apple when going from PPC to intel- is there a 30-day period or something where if you brought a PPC imac, they would exchange it to the intel based imac as a good-will gesture. If they do then fantasti- no need for me to send it back and wait to see if the rumour comes true (and leave myself without a computer in the meantime)

I'm studing computer science and am a heavy user, so ANY speed increases are very welcome. bring on the coore 2 duos! I was a PC user since beginning of time (thats all my parents brough lol) but now ive gone to mac and osx, theres no looking back.

dont get me wrong, the imac is QUICK with 2GB RAM, but core 2 duo is faster....
any help would be really appreciated.

I wonder if someone is going to sue Best Buy as a result of this ad? The ad does mention that there is a limited quantity and no-rain checks. I think they probably should have placed in small text to call ahead for availability.

The fact that it appears to be ploy to get people to come in and give them money to reserve one is not going to sit well with a lot of people. I personally hope it backfires on them and makes people not want to go to their store. Who knows? Maybe this will lead them down the same path that happened to Circuit City.

Something tells me your drinking Apple koolaid.

I had the original iPhone when it was less then two months old, and bought the 3gs shortly after it's release too.

Not that it is any of your business, but I upgrade in my equipment in cycles. Instead of the craptastic iPhone 4, I bought a Sony Nex-5 with three lenses and a MacBook Pro i7 HR. This year it's time for a new phone. Soon.

It was a nobrainer for me not to upgrade to a POS. Hopefully they will get it right.. on time this time. I'm not bitching and moaning about slower release cycles, it's a stupid idea when a company like Apple has the ability to do the opposite. Maybe your ok waiting longer for old tech... ever wonder why PPC was ditched? But you must be happy with your PowerBook.

Its ok though. I used to be like you, taking opinions & shots at Apple personally. You might get out of it IF your smart enough.... Maybe not though in that case though.

I'm not sure how you can call the iPhone 4 a "POS". I've had all the iPhones and it is MUCH better in about 10 different ways. Don't listen to all the stupid BS about the antenna... I've NEVER had the issue unless I sat they and tried to do it exactly as told. Even then, minimal. iPhone 4 has many more features, and even just the design, makes the previous ones look like toys.

If I were involved in the design and heard comments like that, I'd be offended. Or actually, probably just ignore it, since the person saying that doesn't know what they're saying... sorry to be mean, but I just don't get it.

As much as I really hate Best Buy (I will not give them a dime of my money, and it has been like this since 2001/2), I wouldn't hold this against them. They will price something they feel the market will pay. A lot of the items they sell are not ones they can make much, if any money on (laptops, computers, stuff like that. Their costs are high on those that they can't really price them higher than what they pay). So they have to make up for it in the peripherals which are dirt cheap but they can get people to pay a lot more for. Pricing isn't about only charging a little more extra than what you pay, it's about what people will pay and what will actually get you a profit enough to run the business.

My roommate worked for CompUSA 10 years ago and their employee discount was that they paid what CompUSA paid for stuff. The discount was pretty much non existant on computers cause of that reason.

Pretty much. It's too bad that Best Buy is one of the few places these days to go to look at computer stuff, it's still nice to go to the brick and mortar store. I'm lucky I at least have a Fry's relatively close (with gas prices though they're far enough to be costly to get to :( ).

But yeah, I don't shop there. I will occasionally use them to go look at a product. Last time I was in there was to check out the Nintendo 3DS. I get the feeling Best Buy isn't doing so well. Half their lights were out (like how stores will put the lighting when the store is closed and it is only employees, but this was middle of the day) and it really made it feel dingy.

I hate to tell them, but I think that's a big thing that helped killed Circuit City. When they weren't doing well they started not updating the interior of the store, and doing stuff that made it look dingy and unfun to shop at. You don't want your store to look like it's doing badly.

(and I'm just spiteful enough that if they do go out of business, I'm hoping it is their cruddy customer service chasing customers away that bit them in the a**. It will be more disappointing if it was just not being able to compete with online places - maybe it will be a combo of both. Not being able to compete with prices and having crappy customer service that doesn't convince people it's worth the extra price).

You bring up a good point. I also think that BB is not doing well.
For that matter I think the day of the big electronics superstores are numbered.
Crazy Eddie, Circuit City and a few smaller ones I know all went out of business, because all of these guys compete with Walmart, Sears etc. where the same product is available.

Many department stores also discontinued selling TVs and low margin electronics.

Anybody buying cables and extended warranties at BB is just uninformed.

Sometimes manufacturers seem to change the model number of a TV for a certain store, but the average consumer goes by price and size.

Don't think keeping the lights on will help BB:-)

Target also has them in tomorrow's ad.

Not sure if anyone encountered issues, but I know our store receive five iPad 2s on Tuesday, and then got an internal e-mail on Thursday telling us that we will be receiving a case of five iPad 2s for the Sunday ad, and as such, to hold them until that time.

Yeah, we pretty much sold them that Tuesday. Thanks for the advance warning.

My apologies on behalf of Target if you kept running into stores that never had them in stock.

In addition, your conduct violates your own "Corporate Code of Ethics," making a mockery of your supposed corporate values.

You should be ashamed of your luddite and monopolistic behavior.

I really do believe that Sam Walton would be very upset at the path Wal-Mart has taken.

That's why I added an iPod interface to my car. Toss the iPod in the glove box and control it from the steering wheel. ;)

I am picturing you steering right to go down a list, left to go up and honking each time you want to middle button. :)

Actually the HD based iPods don't get along too well with the vibrations generated from a motorcycle. With that said I did take a 6000 mile trip with my iPod Video and definitely put some wear and tear on the HD. Later in life it even started acting up in the Jeep on paved roads. I hope the HD has completely failed now for whomever stole it. ;)

My HD based iPods that failed from too much time on the back of a motorcycle didn't show signs of failing. They just farted out and unhappy faced me out of the blue.

The classic is nice while doing yard work. If I don't like a song I can just reach down without looking and hit the skip button. No need to stop, take off the gloves and unlock the screen.

You know, it's like the headphones with remote and mic w/ volume controls never happened to half you folk. After a very short and easy learning curve, it's even easier to interact for basic functions than the wheel. One of the projects that's on my list of to-dos before my South American ride is to rig a control scheme.

Why is that different for any other part of the federal budget? Federal $ = Federal jobs + Contractor jobs.

So a $60B cut (that isn't enough) will result in > 100K federal jobs lost and likely a similar number of first line government contractors.

Some funding results in more jobs than others. For example, cuts to Medicaid funding that are derived from reducing fraud and abuse, actually result in more jobs (enforcement). The same cuts from the military may result in the loss of some military positions, or more likely, the cutting of some program which will result in job losses.

Not all cuts are created equal, and not all spending results in the same benefit. (Tax cuts result in almost no economic benefit, but unemployment results in a large economic multiplier).

I am pleased to see these colour iPods back. I have a 6GB Mini and i would have liked Apple to have made maybe a 6GB or 8GB Nano in different colours. If i get one of these new Nanos it would feel like a bit of a downgrade to me in terms of space. I guess that i would be gaining in other areas though. I do suspect though that Apple will up the hard drive capacity on these colour Nanos in the future.
It is a bit strange they way that they have done this though making all the colour ones 4GB and the 8GB the black one only.

I noticed also that they only support 10.3.9 and up all those who are using older Mac Software are going to face a bit of a problem if they want to buy one of these new Nanos.

So you think that Adobe is bad because CS3 does not run on Snow Leopard?

    Think again.

CS3 has been published a long while ago, and Snow Leopard is brand new. A lot of system libraries have changed. I do not expect Windows 3.1 software to run correctly on Windows 7 either.

Are there any Mac developers out there?

    Whats your point here?
You state old software wouldn't run on a new OS yet you go off and rant in the rest of your post.

Apple must have caused software vendors to rewrite their software a gazillion times:

    - they switched from the 68K to the PowerPC to Intel

Software vendors writing their software gazillion times...please.

Apple made it easier for software vendors.
When going to intel from PPC,software vendors were freaking out that their software wouldn't run.Guess what,Apple came out with Rosetta. There was no problems

    - they switched from OS9 to Carbon to Cocoa
    - for Snow Leopard, if you want to run as a 64-bit app, you have to switch to the Cocoa libraries, and much of Carbon is deprecated.

Apples next OS will most likely drop Carbon altogether. I have written programs for the Mac for a long time now, and I have spent 75% of my productivity just rewriting my programs over and over again to adopt them to Apple's library changes.

Woah Carbon was for OS9 Developers

And with OS X,Apple has carbon and cocoa.
They had theses 2 API for such a long time, they should I just went to Cocoa years ago but no they stuck with 2 to help the software developers.
Besides Carbon is crap, only argument carbon developers used was
"Well the Finder.App was made in carbon so carbon is a better then cocoa"
    lol

Adobe is big, but I bet that many of their Mac programmers are busy just following Apple as they try to leave software vendors in the dust because they switch system libraries and CPUs at will.

Only thing here thats valid if the company develops in carbon.
And for Poor adobe thats the case.

Maybe at this point adobe CS5 can actually be we-written from scratch instead of adding extra code to a already horrible broken coded program which is what Adobe being doing for the past couple of years.

This just proves how idiotic humanity is. These songs have been available in multiple formats for over 40 years, but only now, since they are offered in a lossy digital file, do people buy them.Considering that the Beetles were the 2nd highest selling musical act of the last decade people were still buying the physical CDs.
