XBMC might finally be able to totally replace Apple's own software with the same basic functionality (other than rentals). The only thing it lacks really is AirTunes and video tag reading (the latter of which I gather is already supposed to appear in the next major release). An AppleTV Gen1 with a Crystal card running Linux would then be quite the system with full 1080p output and yet still be able to sync music to other speakers in the house with iTunes.

It *is* private now. This information isn't broadcast anywhere but your own personal computer in the form of an encrypted backup file. The information won't go anywhere but with you and your property.

However, if your iphone gets stolen, the GPS log is likely the least private thing you need to worry about. The thief will have access to your entire contact list, browsing history, etc..

The backup file isn't encrypted unless you select that option.

This database of your locations is stored on your iPhone as well as in any of the automatic backups that are made when you sync it with iTunes. One thing that will help is choosing encrypted backups, since that will prevent other users or programs on your machine from viewing the data, but there will still be a copy on your device.
    from: http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/

The data is actually collected by cell tower triangulation, not GPS.

The data appears to come from cell tower triangulation, rather than the GPS chip from: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/20/your-iphone-is-silently-and-constantly-logging-your-location/

Ok but didn't someone say that CMD + Drag does the same for files?
Yes. Which was also mentioned that cmd+drag is very inconvenient and a hassle to deal with the majority of the time (or at least in my opinion.)

Why Apple just doesn't just enable cmd-x in Finder is beyond me. It would make my life just a little easier at times.

Is 20% speed improvement a lot for a core 2 designation?

The designation "Core 2" comes from the fact that it's a whole new architecture in the chip. The original "Core" processors aren't based on the Core architecture, they were based on the Pentium M. The Core 2 processors (Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest) are based on a 65nm dual-core 64 bit architecture - the desktop and workstation chips are based around the mobile Merom architecture.

Core 2 promised about 20% more performance at the same power requirement as the Core chip at the same clockspeed.

See above I am testing this theory now and will report on the result in about a half hour.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I just ripped a chapter to AVC using 768kps and 640x352 and playing it took my powerbook to 60%. We ARE talking about a powerful codec here.

But then again, 320x240 H.264 made my iBook G3 900 go chunky...

Just want to clarify if the permissions on that Leopard system have been modified?

I see your points, but it would seem more natural to write on the screen (hand eye coordination) or to edit a photo, enlarge it, get rid of red eye, etc. If there was no adversed interaction with the stylus. Moving my hand while watching the cursor move far from the hand gets some getting used to. Using a stylus right on the screen would (in my mind) seem more natural. But you are the Pro, so I will defer to you.
There's no need to defer, I'm sure this will all boil down to personal preferences :) All I know is that I was seriously annoyed by the Palm and Pocket PC interfaces, and a Cintiq I borrowed for a while was the same way. For now, a regular tablet seems to do the trick.

I may feel differently about the interface some day when software is a little better about addressing lag (through better use of threading and so on). Faster hardware helps, but programs still like to wander off and do other things that leave the pointer ahead of the display. It's a little less unnerving if you can't quite see it happening :)

I wonder if these people are buying one to "test it out" or are buying multiple movies.

I concur. 1 and 3 months out will really tell how this service fares.

So far though, it is a good start.

Right, the invitation didn't have a bit Aperture logo on it, either. ;)

    Apple is pathetic.

Sure, many companies copy Apple products, sometimes apple face lawsuit for incredible stupid reasons... and you blame them when they react?
Samsung galaxy is pretty similiar to iPhone 3GS and even it is user interface... i think Apple should ignore it but i can understand it. As for "windows" many users think Microsoft were the first os to use them... because people easily forgot things... in the end it is much more easy to copy as 90% of company do (in general, not from apple but it happens often).

    LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ikea-union-20110410,0,4172495,full.story)

Laborers in Swedwood plants in Sweden produce bookcases and tables similar to those manufactured in Danville. The big difference is that the Europeans enjoy a minimum wage of about $19 an hour and a government-mandated five weeks of paid vacation. Full-time employees in Danville start at $8 an hour with 12 vacation days eight of them on dates determined by the company.

"It's ironic that Ikea looks on the U.S. and Danville the way that most people in the U.S. look at Mexico," Street said.

Well, the right has gotten what it wants. Low wages, no benefits, non-union jobs.

    What next? Reintroduction of slavery?

In the meantime, I'll be just fine with what I have! ;)

I hate this cloud crap. All just an excuse to take away the consumers control of what they buy or use.

    We need a boycott.

BRB guys. Going to go re-read the article so I can find the part where it says Apple is taking away everybody's hard drives.

I think that the phone interface won't have a click-wheel. Rather, it will be all screen with an on-screen wheel changing to an on-screen keypad. No slider action whatsoever. Maybe a hard switch for on/off, answer, and phonebook, but that's about all I'd put on the phone. It'll save on cost and hardware complexity too, not having to include a wheel.

That's what the recent Apple patents lead me to believe. Hopefully this iPod nano with the slide out keyboard is just an early concept. A very early concept.

The term "app" may be generic, but there was no "app" until Apple came into the picture. Apple got there first and everyone (as usual) followed.

This is the chip to use in a (stop gap) gamer machine, but it needs to be fully 64 bit for 4+ gig of RAM, 4 slots of non-buffered ram, support SLI, be user upgradable, multiple video cards inside, 2 disk drives (stripping mode), lots of USB and Firewire ports in a new enclosure.

    Just my opinion.

I don't think low rez is even an option for TV viewing, apple wouldn't release something they'd know was doomed to fail.

    uh...

    Apple III
    LISA
    The Newton
    The G4 Cube
The Apple Hi-Fi (who the hell got suckered into that one?)
I swear steve jobs had a nephew or something that he let design a product for the iPOD. What a worthless system that is. IT FITS ON THE SHELF, BUT NOT WITH AN IPOD IN IT!!! GENIUS!!
    APPLE REMOTE??

Do I really need to keep listing things?

All this Disney talk and it could get ugly at the iTUNES Movie Store.

The phone's look is indeed very similar.

Of course, Samsung's Android phone has many additional items such as their pulldown notification shade with built-in radio and orientation lock controls... which many people would love for Apple to copy.

The tablet is a different matter, and doesn't have the same look.

Apple has been stockpiling TONS of great products for the past six months and now we are going to see a barrage of releases. I for one welcome said releases. I really hope they bring out the MBPs.
