No, I can't actually. I'm typing this on a dual 533MHz G4 with 1MB L2 cache per processor - so 2MB total. Same as the Core Duo!

Not really. The CD has some level of cache coherency, this makes it more efficient than separate caches on separate processors.

After being very happy, ( and smug ), for a long time that my black MB didn't have the RSS, it got it. Over a period of a couple of weeks it went from never shutting down, to shutting down every now and then, to I couldn't keep it running for 10 minutes in a row.

I took it to the Genius bar at the Apple store in the international plaza in Tampa, where they replaced the heatsink. Took them about an hour to get it back to me. So far, so good.

A note, I don't believe that the RSS is related to actual temps. One time when my MB shutdown I had the dashboard open, and the intel Core Duo temp widget was reporting a temp of 34 C. Then blink, it was off. I did notice that as my MB got worse and worse, I didn't her the fans come on, ever. Before the RSS started, they would come on now and again. Since the repair, they seem to be running more normally. Fixing to do the firmware update, here's hoping!

    * Windows 7 isn't that bad either (though I HATE that glassy Windows look.)

every year a new igadget comes out, adn the forums are full of "apple will never produce that *insert complaint* monstrocity, it goes against everything that apple stands for

People spend their lives looking at the world in 3d, so perhaps you should be a bit more specific aboiut the implementation of 3d may cause headaches. Now how does that assumption align to glasses free 3d?

Most is a magical word, which is why there is another set of words like glasses-free that is important

    best of both worlds

apple thrives of gimmicks, as longas they have tangible value

    Likely?

Unnecessary to who? The only person who cares is the apple boss who signs off the spec in the hopes it will make apple more profit. A touch screened ipod nano is a poiinless spec, but somebody signed if off for production.

iPod Nano with a touchscreen is good. I find it much easier to browse songs and stuff using a touch screen than the wheel.
Also, 3D (more accurately 4D) causes headaches due to the equipment not being exactly right for each person. The glasses are an obvious example, and the glasses-free technology also has obvious problems (like near/far sighted people). And I say 4D since the 4th dimension is time.

...they had to bring the store down worldwide?
Sometimes I wonder what Apple hires those smart people for, if it's just the morons running their daily business.

Because those morons have to clear caches worldwide so that all the Akamai pages/sites are updated in sync.

What aggression does Canada have to defend itself against? Or are you in the mindset that you guys should be imperialistic like us?

What makes it worse is that the US doesn't benefit from it's imperialistic tendencies aside from a few corrupt politicians and the select defense and oil business. The net effect to the tax payer is negative. The UK at least was smart enough to let it's empire go when it realized that it was no longer profitable.
    Cheers,

    Ahmed

Wait a second. They use a 3rd party wireless card, and he said in the end that "the flaw is not in the Apple operating system as we used 3rd party hardware". I'd say that's quite different from the impression I got from reading the macrumors headline here. A default MacBook using the built in Airport isn't vulnerable as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. I have to admit, I didn't even know you could use a third party wireless card with a Mac. It does seem kind of misleading, cause I just can't imagine how many people are even out there with MacBooks that are using this third party wireless card.

Is this at least a driver that is built into OS X anyway, or is it something you would also have to install along with the third party wireless card?

It does seem pretty misleading to me, because I think the way this story is being presented is that Apple is basically shipping MacBooks that could be exploited right out of the box, and that doesn't sound like it's actually the case.

I agree. Linux has the best server software out there. MS use to use their server software. But when you combine the sums of the parts, those numbers start to get very very small.
you could say the same for os x ;). seriously, on some areas linux propably has the best apps there is. same goes for os x. it depends on what you do with the machine.

I get it- as a wife, I was the one buying the iPads, with money I make in my consulting business. However, my husband would have not been pleased if it was blowing all of our discretional income without discussing it first...

In this case, since he gets my iPad 1, he is happy, and he's thrilled that I've made enough $ through my p/t job to afford to do this.

Marriage is all about mutual responsibility. And while he "asks" me before buying stuff for his wood workshop, I don't ever think I would say "no"- depending on the expense it might only be "not now". Our unspoken rule is if it's a non-essential over about $200, the other spouse should be advised and gets a courtesy ask. Keeps us both happy.

I'm a guy, but I think its reasonable to discuss major purchases with your spouse. Of course it goes both ways. She can't just go out and drop $500 on shoes/purses/girls nights out without discussing it. And if one spouse is a stay at home parent, they still get a say in managing the household expenses. It is a mutual respect issue.

Does it mean that apple takes your battery back whether you like it or not? Because it might explode?

They "recycle" the casing. As in use it again. They dispose the battery.

Apparently only nine cases of exploding/flammable batteries have been documented.

And if you don't send it back they will bill you. The cost for not returning the defected battery will be stated in the packaging of the replacement.

Web developers need to use approved open standards and stop using Flash as a crutch. And if by Apple's own image, you mean far superior open standards that are approved by the W3C, then yes!
How is using what's often times necessary a crutch? Trying putting any kind of multimedia on your website or handling reliable file uploads and you'll quickly see why you need Flash to reach the broadest audience. Developers have been shouting to the W3C for years for what we need and HTML5 still doesn't address much of the stuff you'd rely on Flash for.

Sadly, most Flash use is gratuitously used by developers with no html standards based alternative (which is stupid to say the least) so Flash gets a bad rap but when it's done well, it blends right in. There's a reason why Yahoo, Gmail, youtube, vimeo, etc. all use flash.

It's nice to see the generally positive comments on this forum, other forums for "professionals" are not so happy!

Personally I can't wait to start working with it.

You should have been here earlier! I think before everyone had seen some video of the presentation some people were getting heated!

Apple won't sell a suite (there are no suites in the App Store). Look at iWork - just individual apps for purchase. They'll probably charge $299 for FCP and $99/each for the other apps, or have it all rolled up into Final Cut Pro.

Wow $99 is sounding awfully wishful! I mean Color was considered a steal at being part of the $1,000 suite! I can't see how Apple is going to do offer the suite. Is FCPX the new FCE but it also comes as part of the $800ish suite?

Perhaps as it has been speculated FCPX is it and all the other applications fit into it (perhaps given the reason for skipping 8 & 9 revisions?)

I think Apple still has some big tricks under its sleeves and its a worthwhile one more thing... that we haven't seen in a while!

I haven't seen the video. But if the description of the vulnerability says "seize control" or "aribtrary code execution", it's the real thing. They can do whatever they want, although sometimes restricted by the privileges of the user that the compromised process is running as.

Here's the link to the main blog page, with video: link (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/)

    What do you think?

How do you know that you are going to get a new one and not a refurbished one. And what old macbooks are you talking about, they didnt release any new ones yet. Thanks for the help.

I am talking about the CD macbook. It is known that they put old/previous models on the refurb site. Ask anyone on here.

Why don't you just look at the 'refurb' section of the site? Someone also mentioned that just prior to the release of the CD MBP on the 24th they put the whole range of CD MBP on the refurb site when there was usually just a small selection.
